HIElights of Hope Fundraiser

$4,200.00 raised
GOAL: $5,000.00
Hi! My name is Simran Bansal, and I am the author of HIElights of Hope, an anthology that highlights the stories of those impacted by hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, from families to healthcare providers to researchers. Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a condition where an infant's brain is deprived of oxygen, often leading to neurodevelopmental complications. Many HIE families express the desire to hear the stories of others who have endured similar struggles as them, and yet, there is a lack of resources that exist to fulfill this need. The HIE family stories that do exist are often scattered across different platforms, making it difficult for families to hear many stories at once.

Since the range of potential outcomes of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is so wide, hearing a breadth of diverse stories can help parents better cope with uncertainty, consider different possibilities, and conceptualize what the future might look like. Furthermore, the current narrative surrounding the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) focuses heavily on preemies, leading parents of full-term infants with HIE to feel largely excluded and out of place. By highlighting the narratives of those impacted by HIE in a centralized location, HIElights of Hope spreads awareness about HIE, helps families feel less alone, and highlights that just like the outcomes of HIE, those impacted are diverse and come from a variety of backgrounds.

In partnership with Hope for HIE, a nonprofit organization that aims to offer support and community to those affected by HIE, my goal is to distribute copies of HIElights of Hope to NICUs nationwide. This way, parents who are new to the oftentimes overwhelming, uncertain, and isolating experience of HIE can have access to a resource that shows them that there is a community out there ready to support them and that there is hope undefined by outcome. 100% of proceeds raised will be spent towards purchasing and delivering this vital support resource to NICUs.

Who's donating: from Glen Head, NY donated. Thank you!
